Policies in the 4D LABS User Facilities

The following documents outline some of the policies for users in 4D LABS. If you have any questions, please email

4D LABS is the result of approximately $65 million in funding and support from various agencies. It is extremely important that both 4D LABS and these funding agencies are acknowledged in any publications and presentations that come from work using our facilities. These acknowledgements help to demonstrate the value of 4D LABS to our funding partners and also help us as we endeavour to keep the equipment operational and expand our capabilities. When you publish or present, we suggest the following text for your acknowledgement section:

  • This work made use of the 4D LABS shared facilities supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF), Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), and Simon Fraser University (SFU).

In addition to providing training and access to tools in 4D LABS, our staff are often supporting students and faculty by interpreting data and developing future experiments and new processes. We would like to recognize this effort with co-authorship when our staff's contribution is integral to the research being done, and above what can be considered as a 'service'.

While this can be subjective, we suggest the following guideline. If it is strictly training on a tool with standard recipes or processes, then no co-authorship is necessary. If the staff are consulting with data interpretation, research design, or process development, then co-authorship should be considered.

If you have a publication you are preparing that should involve our staff, please let us know! In addition to showing the value of 4D LABS, it also helps our staff gain recognition for their work as they advance their careers. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
